Report Illegal Dumping

July 18, 2010

There’s just about nothing that irritates me more than setting out for a nice hike and coming across a pile of illegally dumped trash. This all-too-common practice is a blight on our community and the beauty of the surrounding high desert. Depending on what is dumped, it can also create a zone of various types of hazardous waste. Clearly, there is no legitimate excuse for illegal dumping and it needs to be dealt with in a vigorous manner. Regular citizens like you and I can make a difference.

Nevada Revised Statute 444.630 prohibits the dumping of any solid waste, including junk vehicles, garbage, rubbish, construction/demolition debris, yard debris, or other refuse at any place other than at a facility designated for such purpose. There is a reward of $100 for information leading to the conviction of any person violating illegal dumping laws. To report illegal dumping in open space areas, call the hotline at (775) 329-DUMP. Do not remove items from the dump site. Officers need the dump site intact for evidence purposes. To report dumping on private property in Reno, call Reno Direct at (775) 334-4636. In Sparks, call (775) 353-2384.
