Ailey II Presented by Artown

January 21, 2011

The country’s best young dance talent, performing together as the renowned Ailey II, is coming to Reno for a January 25 performance in Artown’s Encore series. The innovative performance combines passion, spirit and energy for an unforgettable performance. The Ailey II repertoire includes Revelations, created by Alvin Ailey in 1960 and an exploration of grief and joy. Taking a journey through African-American spiritual music, the performance is a dance on land and water told in three sections. Additional works performed will include Splendid Isolation II, The Calling and The Hunt.

Ailey II combines the very best students of The Ailey School, founded by Alvin Ailey and accredited in 1982, handpicked by Artistic Director Sylvia Waters. With Waters’ direction the 12 members of the company have led Ailey II to flourish as one of the most prestigious dance companies in the country. In addition to touring, wide-ranging community outreach programs are part of the Ailey II project. The company presents a second private performance January 26 for students from the Washoe County School District as part of Artown’s ongoing arts experience opportunities for youth. The performance will expose students not only to modern dance but to African American history as well, just days before the start of Black History Month.

Ailey II performs in the Grand Sierra Resort Grand Theatre at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $25 to $45. Tickets are available online from Artown, by phone at (800) 648-3568, and in person with no service fees at the Grand Sierra Resort box office. For more information call (775) 322-1538.
