Karen DeSouza Memorial Pet Adoption Festival

April 13, 2011

More than 200 dogs and cats will transform the parking lot at Atlantis Casino Resort Spa into a Pet Adoption Festival on Saturday, April 30. Sponsored by PETCO and PETCO Foundation, the free event runs from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Coming off a great 2010 season, the UNR Wolf Pack football team will be available for autographs and to help encourage successful adoptions.

The event is one component of a weekend-long, community-wide Pet Adoptathon 2011. The weekend activities are all part of the international Pet Adoptathon 2011 where thousands of animal shelters across the country will stay open around the clock to find homes for dogs and cats. Nevada Humane Society will be open from 9 a.m., April 30 through 9 p.m., May 1. The overall goal of Pet Adoptathon 2011 is to find loving homes for 225 pets.

The 4th annual Pet Adoption Festival – organized by Nevada Humane Society and SPCA of Northern Nevada – will feature nearly 50 regional rescue groups and shelters, humane organizations and pet-related businesses. Pet parades, raffles, face painting, celebrity emcees, K9 unit demonstrations by law enforcement agencies and low-cost microchipping are all part of the day’s activities. The event is named in honor of local animal rescuer Karen DeSouza, whose death in 2009 left an enormous void in the region’s rescue world.

All new pet parents at the Karen DeSouza Memorial Pet Adoption Festival will receive a Welcome Waggin’ goody bag with pet supplies and special offers. Atlantis Casino Resort Spa is located at 3800 S. Virginia St. in Reno. For event information, call (775) 324-7773 (SPCA) or (775) 786-2000 (Nevada Humane Society).
