Up, up, and away – Great Reno Balloon Race

September 7, 2011

For a fantastic and free family event, the Great Reno Balloon Race can’t be beat. This year’s event is from September 9 through 11. The only drawback is that you have to get up before the birds to enjoy some of the spectacular sights of the Great Reno Balloon Race. Two events, the Glow Show and Dawn Patrol, occur while it’s still dark. For the mass ascension, over 100 hot air balloons begin inflating their envelopes as the night sky gives way to early morning light. By the time daylight arrives, the sky is dotted with an amazing variety of colorful balloons.

The Great Reno Balloon Race corresponds with the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States. The official northern Nevada commemoration ceremony of that event will be in the early morning hours of September 11, attended by Governor Brian Sandoval and other dignitaries. In addition to this event, there will be numerous others in Nevada and all across the nation.

Hot air ballooning is dependent on the weather. Adverse conditions can alter the schedule or even ground some events. The forecast for this year’s event looks good so far. but it’s always a good idea to check the weather forecast before heading out to Rancho San Rafael Park for the Great Reno Balloon Race.
