Events at the Wilbur D. May Arboretum

September 16, 2011

The magic and beauty of basket weaving unfolds before your eyes when the Great Basin Basket Makers create a six-foot basket during a special demonstration at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 17, in front of the Wilbur D. May Arboretum Office (1595 N. Sierra Street in Reno) at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park. Basket makers will use tree trimmings collected in the Arboretum to weave their basket during the two-hour demonstration. Additional basket makers will be on hand to demonstrate different basket weaving techniques and tours of the garden will be offered.

At 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 18, 2011, learn a unique way to beautify home and garden by creating hand-made hypertufa plant containers during a special workshop offered by the May Arboretum Society. Society member Linda Good leads this three hour, hands-on class where participants will be asked to create two pots using the hypertufa technique. One pot will be for the participant, the other will be donated back to the May Arboretum Society to help raise funds for the Arboretum during the Society’s 2012 Plant Sale. Class cost is $35 plus a $10 material fee. Proceeds from the workshop will benefit the May Arboretum. Class size is limited and advanced registration required.
