Beware of scammers and crooks during the holidays

December 4, 2011

Scammers and crooks come out of hiding during the holidays, trying to take advantage of the friendly and giving spirit that is more prevalent during this season. According to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, you should beware of people trying to get you to send money immediately by purporting to be friends, family, respected companies, or government agencies. These criminals frequently approach intended victims by phone, trying to extract money for a loved one or others with an urgent need.

Personal information needed to contact people is frequently acquired from social networking sites. You are cautioned not to put such details online about yourself or anyone else. It’s too easy for criminals to sound familiar when you give them everything they need.

For more information about how to avoid fraud during the holidays (and at all times), read this press release from the Sheriff’s Office. If you suspect a scam, or actually get cheated, call (775) 832-WCSO (9276) immediately so law enforcement can act quickly.
