New snow in the Sierra

February 29, 2012

Better late than never. That’s how lots of people are looking at the latest Sierra snow storms, which have also dumped a blanket of the white stuff on Reno as well as on the mountains around Lake Tahoe. It has breathed some new life into the ski season, though probably not enough to revive a dismal season at this late date. However, dedicated skiers now have some new powder to carve and there’s plenty to slide on if you want to take the kids and dogs to one of our nearby snow play areas. If you venture over to the California side, be sure to get a SNO-PARK permit so as to avoid an expensive parking ticket.

Even with these latest storms, the snow pack remains well below normal. Because of the extraordinarily heavy winter last year, we won’t have any water shortage issues this summer. As always, however, we should all keep water conservation in mind.

Before leaving for the mountains, check highway conditions and the weather forecast. There’s no point in driving into trouble if you don’t have to.
