Talk or text while driving – get a ticket

May 25, 2013

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office has issued 449 citations from January 1, 2013 through April 30, 2013 to drivers talking or texting on their handheld cell phone device. Nevada State Law prohibits the use of any handheld cell phone while driving and getting cited for doing so is punishable by fines of up to $250.

Washoe County Sheriff Mike Haley wants the public to know he fully supports the State of Nevada’s traffic safety goal of zero fatalities on Nevada roadways. He believes this goal can be achieved if drivers eliminate distractions and focus on the road.

“My Office will continue enforcing traffic laws because I want Nevada roadways and highways to be as safe as they possibly can be, however, I urge those who continue to risk their lives and the lives of others to consider the most devastating consequences. Maybe then, drivers will understand that the consequence outweighs the importance of using a phone and change their driving behavior,” Sheriff Haley said.

So, come on people; pull over to a safe place and stop before using that smart phone. Be smarter than your device and don’t take the risk of not giving your full attention to driving.
