Shopping Mania – Black Friday

November 27, 2013

Serious shoppers will be out in force on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. However, thanks to “Black Friday creep,” some places will actually start the frenzy on the evening of Thanksgiving Day. Area stores have already been having sales and discounts to lure you in. Black Friday will be a continuation rather than the beginning of Christmas shopping season, but there are likely to be even more bargains on the big day and into the weeks leading up to Santa’s arrival.

For an entertaining break from the buy-buy-buy hype and something to do with the kids, check out the Magic of Christmas Parade at Shopper’s Square (corner S. Virginia & Plumb Lane). Lots of holiday characters and Santa Claus himself will be marching on Friday at 11 a.m. There will also be some fun kid and family activities at The Discovery Museum.

There are other non-shopping things to do as well, including ice skating at Reno’s Rink on the River. Up around Lake Tahoe, several of the ski resorts will be open by Thanksgiving, though operations will be somewhat limited due to scanty snow so far this season. Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe, the closest slopes to Reno, is scheduled to start the lifts on Wednesday, November 27.
