This weekend at Galena Creek Visitor Center

February 5, 2014

There is some great family fun to be had at Galena Creek Visitor Center and the surrounding park this weekend. Here’s what’s in store…

Winter Olympics Guided Hike – Saturday, February 8, starting at 10 a.m. It’s time for the 2014 Winter Olympics, and the Galena Creek Visitor Center is celebrating the hype with a historical look back at the olympic history in the Reno-Tahoe area. Local author David Antonucci will lead a winter guided hike through the park and talk about the 1960’s Olympics in Squaw Valley, on which he has penned two books. David will also talk about Reno’s failed 1955 bid for the same Olympic games. After the hike, David’s newest book will be available for purchase and signing.

Winter Bird Walk – Sunday, February 9, starting at 9 a.m. Join us for a winter bird walk through Galena Creek Park led by Rob Lowry of the Lahontan Audubon Society. Bring sturdy footwear, sunscreen, water, and binoculars. The Visitor Center has a limited pair of binoculars and snowshoes, if needed, to lend. Please call ahead to reserve a pair.

These programs are free, but a suggestion donation of $5 is requested to help pay for programs. Galena Creek Visitor Center is at 18250 Mount Rose Highway in south Reno. For more information, call (775) 849-4948. Winter hours are Friday through Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
