New Reno mayor elected – GOP takes control in Nevada and the nation

November 5, 2014

Reno has a new mayor and two new city council members following the midterm election on November 4. Hillary Schieve handily beat Ray Pezonella for mayor while Naomi Duerr (Ward 2) and Paul McKenzie (Ward 4) won two city council seats being vacated by term limits. Sparks Mayor Geno Martini won re-election as did two city council members.

In other 2014 election results, Governor Brian Sandoval handily won re-election, bringing the lt. governor and an entire slate of Republican constitutional officers with him. The GOP also took control of both houses of the Nevada State Legislature.

The race for Washoe County Sheriff was tighter than it had been in decades. Former NHP officer Chuck Allen just squeezed by current Undersheriff Tim Kuzanek to take the victory.

Following the big (and expensive) flap over the ouster of Superintendent Pedro Martinez, voters removed Chairwoman Barbara Clark from the Washoe County School Board in favor of Nick Smith. Another seat went to Veronica Frenkel.

Across the nation, voters engaged in a wholesale removal of Democratic office holders. When the dust settled, Republicans came up with a 52 seat majority in the U.S. Senate and increased their already existing majority in the House of Representatives. Governor’s races mostly fell to the GOP as well.
