New location for Rink on the River

November 11, 2014

The Reno Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department has announced that Rink on the River, Reno’s city ice skating will be relocated to the front of Reno Aces Ballpark for the 2014 – 2015 season.

The reason for the move is the imminent demolition of the existing Virginia Street Bridge and construction of its replacement. City Plaza, which has been the location of the ice rink for several years, is right next to the bridge and Truckee River and will be used as a construction staging area during the bridge work.

The choice came down to either delaying construction so the rink could operate this season or move the rink and proceed with replacing the bridge. The city looked into setting up the rink in various parks, but that option was rejected mainly due to the cost. The owners of the Reno Aces came forth and offered to locate the rink in front of the ballpark, along with taking over setup, staffing, security and operating costs. It’s also right next to the Freight House District with its assortment of eating and drinking establishments.
