Construction of Reno’s new the Virginia Street Bridge

Demolition of the historic old Virginia Street Bridge and building its replacement are finally underway. Many years of planning and weighing options led to this point, which was marked by a groundbreaking ceremony next to the bridge on May 20, 2015.

Of course, there will be traffic disruptions and detours during construction. To get the latest information about this and other aspects of the project, refer to the official “Virginia Street Bridge Project” website. Here’s what to expect in the immediate future…

  • Starting Monday, June 1, 2015 – Virginia Street will be closed from Mill Street to First Street. Site preparation and work to remove the old bridge will commence.
  • Week beginning Monday, June 8, 2015 – Demolition of the south span of the bridge is scheduled to begin.

The lead contractor on the job is Q&D Construction of Sparks. The firm will use an innovative construction method that will get the new bridge open by May, 2016. Project work hours are scheduled to be 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. If you need to drive into downtown Reno, plan accordingly to avoid unpleasant surprises.
