Ski resorts starting to open

November 4, 2015

A big winter storm visited Reno and Lake Tahoe to open the month of November, giving us a much needed dose of rain and snow. There has been enough snow, combined with low temperatures, to allow ski resorts around Lake Tahoe to begin opening.

The first to fire up the lifts and get skiers on the slopes is Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe, which commences 2015-2016 winter operations on Wednesday, November 4. Others are sure to quickly follow, trying to make up for lost ground due to several drought-induced dismal seasons in a row. They are all hoping for a great season due to El Nino, but time will tell if that comes to pass.

Not all Reno area ski resorts have announced opening dates at this writing, but here’s what we know so far on tentative opening dates…

  • Alpine Meadows – November 25
  • Boreal – November 6
  • Diamond Peak – December 10
  • Donner Ski Ranch – December 20
  • Heavenly – November 20
  • Homewood – December 11
  • Kirkwood – November 21
  • Mt. Rose – November 4
  • Northstar California – November 20
  • Sierra-at-Tahoe – December 20
  • Squaw Valley – November 25
  • Soda Springs – December 19
  • Sugar Bowl – December 13
  • Tahoe Donner – December 20

The key word at this point is “tentative.” Be sure to check the website or call ahead before heading up to the slopes. Some of these dates might change if snow conditions change for the better… or worse. You will find links to the sites at “Reno / Lake Tahoe Winter Sports Ski Areas & Resorts.”
