August 3, 2016

Get ready for high adventure with this new exhibit at the Wilbur D. May Museum – “Married to Adventure: Photographs from the Travels of Martin and Osa Johnson.” It opens on Saturday, August 6, 2016 and runs through Sunday, October 30, 2016. This exhibition features more than 100 original photographs, movie posters, and artifacts that capture the couple’s spirit of adventure and romance.

You may never have heard of Martin and Osa Johnson, yet they were acclaimed filmmakers, photographers, and explorers of the early 20th century. They ranked among period personalities like Richard Byrd and Charles Lindbergh, bringing their style of adventure in the South Pacific and Africa to fascinated Americans.

Martin was a filmmaker who pioneered wildlife cinematography and a showman who could attract audiences to see his adventure movies. Osa was beautiful, photogenic, charming, a crack shot, and enjoyed high adventure. She excelled at tracking wildlife and organizing complex safaris. Simultaneously, her elegant wardrobe and refined presence earned her the title of one of the best-dressed, widely admired women in America.

A concurrent exhibit will be “On Safari: Photograph’s from Wilbur May’s First African Expedition.” It features never-before-seen photos from the expedition that reveal the beauty of the landscape, people, and wildlife.

Admission to both “Married to Adventure” and “On Safari” is $9 for adults, $8 for seniors and children. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The Wilbur D. May Museum is part of the Wilbur D. May Center located in Reno’s Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, 1595 N. Sierra Street. There is plenty of free parking.
