Winter break for the Washoe County School District is Monday, December 21, 2020 through Friday, January 1, 2021. There aren’t as many things to do during the pandemic, but there are some worth checking out.

For example, there are organized activities by the recreation departments of both Reno and Sparks and creativity camps from Arts for All Nevada. Check “Winter Break Camps and Activities in Reno and Sparks” for details.

Here are some other things to do as well…

If you plan on going up to the mountains, carry your chains and be prepared for winter driving conditions. Before heading out, make sure your car is in good shape and check highway conditions and the weather forecast. If it gets really snowy, be sure to read and heed the information in “Reno Area Winter Driving and Snow Removal.”

The 2020 Christmas season is here, though a damper has been put on the festivities by COVID-19. However, there are still several holiday season events and activities to enjoy in the Reno / Sparks area.

Spectacular holiday shows usually staged by local casinos aren’t happening. But you can still enjoy a virtual performance of “The Nutcracker” by A.V.A. Ballet Theatre with the Reno Philharmonic. The Reno Wind Symphony and Reno Jazz Orchestra are also airing virtual holiday performances.

For something you can actually do in person, try the Santa train rides on the V&T Railroad in Virginia City. Santa’s Drive-Thru Village (which takes the place of the Polar Express this year) down in Carson City provides a safe way for families to visit the North Pole this holiday season. Most events for Christmas on the Comstock in Virginia City have been canceled.

Up in the mountains, you can hit the ski slopes and/or enjoy family fun at our nearby snow play areas.

Our Lake Tahoe ski resorts are getting ready to open their slopes as soon as possible if they haven’t done so already. There has been some natural snow and many of them have extensive snow making capabilities. They obviously want to get skiers buying lift tickets and on the runs ASAP.
