2018 Reno Air Races

September 9, 2018

The 55th Annual Reno National Championship Air Races will be flying over Reno Stead Field from Wednesday, September 12, through Sunday, September 16, 2018.

The air show part of the event consists of performances by multiple aeronautical aces. There is always a headliner, which will be the Patriots Jet Team at the 2018 Reno Air Races. Past performers have included the USAF Thunderbirds, U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the Canadian Forces Snowbirds. Another special feature will be the Air Combat Command F-16 Viper Demonstration Team. Air show performances occur during times between races.

Down on the tarmac, there will be displays of powerful military aircraft currently in service (some open for tours) and lots of beautifully restored historic flying machines. Vendors and exhibitors throughout the grounds will offer a wide variety of food, drink, and merchandise.

Be sure to read through my “2018 Reno Air Races” article for information about the show and races, getting to Reno Stead Airport, parking, and other useful information for enjoying the event as a spectator. To save a few bucks, try going during the first couple of days of the event – ticket prices increase daily, topping out on Saturday and Sunday.

2018 Great Reno Balloon Race

September 5, 2018

The free Great Reno Balloon Race is a spectacular and fun event for all. This will be the 37th year of the annual event held at Reno’s Rancho San Rafael Regional Park.

The 2018 Great Reno Balloon Race will be from Friday, September 7 through Sunday, September 9. The only drawback is that you have to be there well before sunrise to enjoy some of the best sights of the Great Reno Balloon Race. Three events – the Super Glow Show, the regular Glow Show, and Dawn Patrol – all occur while it’s still dark. For the mass ascension, around 100 hot air balloons begin inflating their envelopes as the night sky gives way to early morning light. By the time daylight arrives, the sky is filled with an amazing variety of colorful balloons.

The schedule of events is in my “Enjoy the 2018 Great Reno Balloon Race” article. Be sure to read up on details about attending and enjoying the Great Reno Balloon Race, especially if this will be your first time. You will have more fun and stay safe by being familiar with parking procedures and rules for participating and watching the event.

Hot air ballooning is dependent on the weather. Adverse conditions can alter the schedule or even ground some events. It’s always a good idea to check the weather forecast before heading out to the Great Reno Balloon Race.
